After finishing the Audrey commission I stopped drawing.

In February I started up again. I got a commission from a manager of mine at work. He wanted a couples drawing. The pressure was on. I could not capture his girlfriend. I pushed thru it and the result was super fun.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 227px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XbB5gq9xLHo/T3_OekqlSvI/AAAAAAAAATs/sZHpF7kodKM/s320/steve" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5728524275672238834" />

I also got a request for a print of Harley Quinn, which I originally drew for my sister in law. Two from some close friends for their new baby daughter's nursery. The first was for a Ms. Pac-man and the second for a Barbie silhouette. This piece was commissioned as a Christmas gift. Thank you Ern. The request was for a drawing on a white background with a touch of pastel pink somewhere.

Step one:
Inspiration

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 162px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3ZXuzxLA85U/TuxedTzHQgI/AAAAAAAAASs/XSJLB9GKo3g/s200/Screen%2BShot%2B2011-12-17%2Bat%2B1.12.38%2BAM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687024287085969922" />
These were the pictures that where given to me to choose from. I considered them all. I look for the one that draws my eye the most, that shows the most character, and would be funnest for me to draw. I choose the left one; I liked how massive the hat was, the biting on the glasses, and the curve of her neck/back.

I then sketched out a thumbnail which I have somehow misplaced :(. See the Kobe post for an example.

Step two:
Drawing the facial features.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 311px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TyQsMalQLMo/TuxfeLlR6UI/AAAAAAAAAS4/zzJNpLAhwK4/s320/Screen%2BShot%2B2011-12-17%2Bat%2B1.13.08%2BAM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687025401571961154" />
I start with the eyes, then the nose and mouth.

Step Three:
The shape of the face.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 228px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-du-8tzmWt-8/TuxgSPEdDmI/AAAAAAAAATE/FKcZ9qhk6M8/s320/Screen%2BShot%2B2011-12-17%2Bat%2B1.15.15%2BAM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687026295861218914" />
I played around with some different shapes but decided on the bottom right one. It matched my thumbnail the most.

Step Four:
The body.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 214px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oKsu6FQuLj8/TuxghR8lgnI/AAAAAAAAATQ/SjEwZaJckkc/s320/Screen%2BShot%2B2011-12-17%2Bat%2B1.15.28%2BAM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687026554331562610" />
I placed the face on top of the original picture because I was not getting the correct feel for the curve and proportions. Notice how I changed the jaw and dropped the curve at the edge of the lips (it was making her look older).

Step Five:
The sunglasses and hand.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 270px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TqeHfIFdkvE/TuxhESyiFQI/AAAAAAAAATc/WjoQq-YhNc8/s320/Screen%2BShot%2B2011-12-17%2Bat%2B1.15.40%2BAM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5687027155853251842" />
I was almost done laying the drawing out when my wife noticed how bad the positioning of the hand seemed. she recommended I move it closer to the body and it made all the difference. I added the pink to the lips and that sealed the drawing.Carlos Joaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05506571651425761827noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7331455231127735622.post-85993441501513062562011-09-26T13:27:00.001-07:002011-09-26T14:12:26.561-07:00Kobe<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 288px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EwaBT0uhsFc/ToDiKJp4m0I/AAAAAAAAARU/LbWmVg0oQyk/s400/kb.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656769795995507522" />

Kobe was a piece commissioned by a coworker. It was asked for a long time ago before I began selling my work. Once I began getting orders I decided to create this drawing.

Here is the process:

First I searched thru images on google to find a couple that I felt captured his spirit.

These are the ones I chose.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 160px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jkgj6AgPras/ToDisW8m3GI/AAAAAAAAARk/K48IyqT3GDQ/s200/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-09-26%2Bat%2B1.33.52%2BPM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656770383679249506" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 171px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_B1JrvYR5pk/ToDi_0qN-WI/AAAAAAAAARs/BIQ3PskTyiQ/s200/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-09-26%2Bat%2B1.34.17%2BPM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656770718072699234" />

Then I start sketching the drawing out with pen or pencil. It is very rough. Almost a thumbnail.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 106px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3W9BP-sGvuA/ToDjL85P4VI/AAAAAAAAAR0/wTK6ZBgtI-o/s200/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-09-26%2Bat%2B1.33.32%2BPM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656770926441652562" />

I then scanned my sketch into the computer and start tracing with the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. Here is where all the work and time is really spent. Making shapes appear like hand drawings is something I have become very good at.

It is click here and click there. Use this tool and that one. Combine shapes and send shapes to the back. And all that computer jazz.

As I work I begin thinking about the colors. I pull colors from the pictures and adjust them to my liking. I then start the "inking" process. Making the drawing look like it has been inked.

Here is sample of what traditional inking is.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4emaHYErvwQ/ToDk28t6EpI/AAAAAAAAAR8/bNgvJ3iFZss/s200/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-09-26%2Bat%2B1.46.36%2BPM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656772764640088722" />

Notice the pencils on the left and then the inking on the right. In traditional comics you ink and then you color.

In my work I color and then I "ink".
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 54px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kmr4iwAvrEc/ToDmfqLkXAI/AAAAAAAAASM/iMZtejm9f2Q/s200/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-09-26%2Bat%2B1.53.44%2BPM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656774563550485506" />

I then added the background to make it appear like he was on the basketball court playing in front of his Laker fans.
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 157px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KT3GLSwkwKU/ToDlfNdVOzI/AAAAAAAAASE/PFt1QSnWphE/s200/Screen%2Bshot%2B2011-09-26%2Bat%2B1.49.40%2BPM.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5656773456328735538" />Carlos Joaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05506571651425761827noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7331455231127735622.post-17638976390418854552011-09-15T00:28:00.001-07:002011-09-18T01:07:26.715-07:00My First Commission<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 290px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ALDyoCRRG3A/TnGq2tDmtNI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/gbXtjL01X5g/s400/isis.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5652486864111056082" />

It was 2 years ago that a friend had given me a framed picture of one of my drawings as a Christmas gift exchanged. It was then that ideas of having my drawings hung up on a wall began to fill my mind.

My first paid commission was requested by another friend who now runs a bakery shop. She was the first to offer me actual money for one of my digital drawings. She paid for an Edward Cullen for her mother-in-law and then asked me to do an original drawing.

She wanted to give her "compadres" a drawing of her goddaughter. I was flattered to be given such a task. I was worried that the final image would not be any good. Self-esteem issues where plaguing my mind. I wanted to give up and say I was not up to the challenge.

I persevered and finished the drawing. I was nervous to hear the feedback. When she saw it she loved it. She even gave me more money than I had asked for.

Later at a wedding the parents came up to me and thanked me for the beautiful drawing I had made for them. It was a special moment.

Thank you friends for encouraging me begin my journey.Carlos Joaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05506571651425761827noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7331455231127735622.post-47681235271072182162011-09-12T10:49:00.000-07:002011-09-12T10:56:25.245-07:00Bella Swan<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 271px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t8o-F7hgLeM/Tm5GbhonwpI/AAAAAAAAAQ0/17xG4lLt08o/s400/guess%2Bwho%2Bb.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5651532021095711378" />

Bella is a character in the book Twilight. I had two drawings from the series already and decided to finish the set.

Edward and Jacob need to be reworked. When I compare them with Bella it seems that there is a big difference in technique/skill. Edward and specially Jacob seem like a rough draft. In art school that was always a critique by one of my teachers. She said I had a glimmer of talent starting to show and she wished I would finish the work. The app has a hidden pen tool in the shapes drop down.

I was making a caricature of myself and my belly. (I will post it here later)

I was having a bunch of fun until I realized people were looking on. Then I got self conscience and the flow was running out of me. I got it back and then one of my coworkers asked if I could draw them.

Then the pressure was on. ♫ Pushing down on me...

It was an experience. But people seemed to enjoy it and more people asked if I could draw them. Thank you coworkers!Carlos Joaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05506571651425761827noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7331455231127735622.post-30729121112161165112010-10-23T00:11:00.001-07:002010-10-23T00:28:02.931-07:00The Art ShowYesterday was my first art show. I did not know what to expect.

I showed up with three pieces. Conan, Don Draper, and Elvis. They were framed really nicely. Thank you so much Frankie for all your advice.

A fellow artist named Jun, said I was "so green". Since I did not even have any business cards with me. I had a sign up sheet so I could email people that were interested in my work.

Fellow artists gave me tips on how to set up my work. It was a great vibe being there.

Then all my friends and family started showing up and it was amazing. The night went by so quick. I got four contacts and got to see people's reaction to my drawings. Everyone was so nice, but you really can't go to an art show and tell someone they suck, can you?

People gave me great advice: Send Conan your drawing. Maybe he would wear it as a tshirt.

Thank you all for making me feel like an artist.Carlos Joaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05506571651425761827noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7331455231127735622.post-22473539722637708512010-10-20T23:17:00.000-07:002010-10-20T23:21:33.622-07:00Kinko's @ 11 p.m.Met a nice guy at Kinko's. He was there to pick up something and I was getting my stuff for the art show.

He asked about my drawings and then he asked where he could buy one of my prints! It was such a great feeling. I directed him to this blog. (Hello kind sir).

Anyone can access my Etsy shop on the right hand side now.

He also suggested I send my Don Draper drawing to Matthew Weiner. I think I will follow his advice.Carlos Joaquinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05506571651425761827noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7331455231127735622.post-60603055544954463302010-09-19T21:16:00.000-07:002010-09-27T17:42:38.347-07:00If I Can Dream<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 302px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_frYt92YT-YE/TKE5mas2DbI/AAAAAAAAAPw/DUH6sFJHG1Q/s400/elvis2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5521757950298164658" />
Here is an updated version with background.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 309px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_frYt92YT-YE/TJbm5tpuVcI/AAAAAAAAAO8/kK0GVB6hBjc/s400/Picture+5.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5518852272570652098" />
Here is an old drawing I made of Elvis.
